What Is Laparoscopy?

Laparoscopy is a method of doing surgery through tiny incisions (cuts). It’s not the same as “open” surgery, in which the incision on the skin might be several inches long. Laparoscopic surgery is often known as “minimally invasive surgery.”

A laparoscope is a specific device used in laparoscopic surgery. The laparoscope is a long, narrow instrument that is introduced into the belly via a tiny incision. It is equipped with a camera, which lets the doctor observe the abdomen and other organs on a screen.

Other instruments can be used with a laparoscope to repair an issue. These tools are often placed into the belly through further tiny incisions. They can occasionally be introduced through the same incision as the laparoscope.

Laparoscopy may take longer than open surgery. The longer you are under anesthesia, the higher the chance of problems. Complications do not often manifest straight away, but may arise a few days to a few weeks following surgery. 

Laparoscopy complications can include the following:

• Bleeding or a hernia (a bulge caused by poor healing) at the incision sites
• Internal bleeding
• Infection
• Damage to a blood vessel or other organ, such as the stomach, bowel, bladder, or uterus

Occasionally, the doctor starts with laparoscopy but needs to switch to open surgery. This might occur if the doctor discovers anything that could be cancer and a wider incision is required to remove it. It might also happen if the doctor discovers anything unexpected (for example, an infection) or if a problem develops that needs open surgery to cure. 

Discuss with your doctor what will happen if he or she is forced to do open surgery.

Today, many routine operations may be performed laparoscopically. The complexity of your problem will determine if you are a candidate for laparoscopic surgery. Some complex illnesses may need open surgery to treat. However, because of its cost-saving benefits and superior patient outcomes, laparoscopic surgery is quickly becoming the chosen default approach for a rising number of routine surgeries.

How is the procedure carried out?

A tiny incision around your belly button or pelvic bone is made to commence the procedure. This initial incision allows carbon dioxide gas to be pumped into your abdominal or pelvic cavities. As ports for surgical tools, laparoscopic surgery employs thin surgical tubes known as trocars. The surgeon will enter the first trocar before inserting the gas line to fill your abdominal or pelvic cavity with gas. This helps to remove the abdominal wall from the organs and makes them easier to see on the television display.

Most of the time, you’ll be able to return home the same day. The total healing time is two to three weeks. You might expect some usual wound discomfort throughout this period. This should be bearable with short-term pain medication and should become better in a few days. If it does not, notify your doctor.

When should I be worried about my post-op recovery?

If you have any of the following symptoms, contact your doctor:

• Fever and chills
• Constant nausea and vomiting
• The pain is growing worse, not better
• Swelling or redness at the location of the incision
• A limb’s pain or swelling
• Discharge or bleeding that is abnormal
